A Tougher Battle Ahead for Gawad Kalinga

More than ever, the Philippines is suffering from the backlash of the world economic recession. Companies are shutting down left and right, causing millions to lose their source of bread and butter. Unemployment rates are skyrocketing, the state of poverty is worsening, and prices of necessities are going through the roofs. Filipinos, especially the poorest of the poor, are taking the financial hit to the hilt.

Despite the bleak living conditions in the country, it is still comforting to know that Gawad Kalinga is here to help poor Filipinos breathe easier in surviving the drowning state of the economy. On the other hand, can the current efforts of GK suffice in materializing its objectives?

GK is now calling for massive volunteerism by spreading the good word about the GK spirit. Universities tie up with the organization to involve their students in the cause and at the same time, harness the young minds’ sense of patriotism. Schools are not the only community taking part in Gawad Kalinga’s programs. Companies and the business sector are also sharing labor and financial resources for GK to extend its help to more poor Filipinos. These companies are going beyond their business objectives and practice corporate social responsibilities by helping poverty-stricken communities improve. Government officials also support the cause by using their power in influencing people to take time to join the movement.
